Orchestre Poly-Rythmo de Cotonou – Echos Hypnotique vol. 2

Tommy McGee never got a chance to make it in his day, but this comp by Numero Group has made a classic of McGee’s soulful funk. I’m A Stranger compiles 18 soulful tracks about love, heartbreak, and everything in between from McGee’s timeless album Positive-Negative, his singles for Golden Voice, Mercury, TMG, and Tosted, as well as the complete output of his band the T.M.G.’s. “What Can I Do” opens with the emotional appeal of a rejected lover. “Give and Take,” a track that’s especially smooth with guitar wah and a seductive bass line, showcases McGee’s vocal range and flawless vibrato. “Now That I Have You,” sounds like a song that you would have grown up listening to. It has a brilliantly catchy chorus that’s charming and full of joy. Perhaps the most sentimental and tender ballad of the record is “Make Sure.” McGee sings delicately in falsetto and a perfectly placed string section brings the track over an emotional edge that’s both impactful and lovely. This is easily a record you can put on and please anyone within ear shot.
