Haruomi Hosono – Tropical Dandy

A dozen instrumentals by the LA-based bassist/multi-instrumentalist whose regular gigs at the Enfield Tennis Academy with Jeff Parker have become the stuff of legend, Anna Butterss’ debut album as a bandleader arrived with little fanfare in 2022. For those who caught it, it’s become an obsession. Butterss recorded the album at Lucy’s Meat Market in Highland Park and played most of the music within. A brilliant bassist, Activities sees Butterss move from Fender Rhodes and analog synth to drums, percussion, flute and vocals. It features a guest appearance from the bassist’s compadre in Parker’s trio, alto sax player Josh Johnson, with singular rhythmic accents from a trio of guest percussionists, including producer Pete Min. – Randall
