Anna Själv Tredje – Tussilago Fánfara

A private press holy grail of Swedish synthesizer music, Tussilago Fánfara is the lone release from space-rock band Anna Själv Tredje, whose core members Ingemar Ljungström and Mikael Bojén had close connections to legendary Swedish progressive groups Cosmic Overdose and Ragnarök. Clearly inspired by Berlin School masters like Tangerine Dream, Cluster, and Klaus Schultz, the multi-instrumentalist duo present their own take on cosmic mind-expanding electronic music, but propelled at a slower, and resultantly more psychedelic, pace. A2 “Ankomster Utanför Tiden” almost has a haunted quality to it with whispered voices seemingly closing in on swirling guitars, organ, and phasing analog synthesizer swells before opening up into a percussion and fuzzy lead guitar-driven section. Closer “Tusen År & Sju Timmar” pulls back on the synthesizers for a medieval number featuring guitars so completely drenched in reverb that the surrounding space almost becomes an instrument in itself.
