Astrid Sonne – Great Doubt
One of our favorites of the year so far, Great Doubt is the breakthrough third album from Danish composer Astrid Sonne. Landing somewhere between indie pop and experimental electronic music, the album brings together viola, piano, guitars, and live drums with Sonne’s unpretentious songwriting and classically-informed electronic production. While there is certainly a certainly a high-brow element to the album with it’s plucked strings, spoken word, and abstract arrangements, Sonne doesn’t seem to be at all unapproachable here and there’s a sense of honesty in her songwriting as she sings “you look at me, do you wanna have a baby?” and “everything is unreal.” “Give My All” paraphrases Mariah Carey’s 1997 ballad “My All” and sets a sort of unsettling mood with its dark 808 drum groove and unresolved string harmonies. Recommended for fans of Tirzah, Mica Levi, and Tara Clerkin Trio!
