Barış Manço

A classic mini-album from Be Bop Deluxe founder Bill Nelson during his creative peak period, Chimera builds on the success of 1982’s The Love That Whirls with more impeccably produced romantic electro-pop featuring Roland TR-808 grooves and Nelson’s singular electric guitar playing. While previous Nelson albums were essentially one-man-band type projects, Chimera actually features a few key guest contributions from Yellow Magic Orchestra (Nelson recorded guitar on their album Naughty Boys) drummer Yukihiro Takahashi and Japan’s Mick Karn on fretless bass. While the whole album is great, “Tender is the Night” is the clear winner here with Nelson’s own bouncy fretless bass driving the track, some seriously addictive guitar riffs, and a euphoric marimba bridge section. Look out for this one in bargain bins!
