The second act of David Axelrod’s musical interpretations of William Blake’s epic Songs of Innocence and of Experience pulls the distorted rock guitar back a tad in favor of a more subdued acoustic and symphonic sound. The Wrecking Crew’s Carol Kaye continues to dazzle with her cutting precision bass. While the album displays a wealth of emotions as a full listen, “The Human Abstract” is certainly the cut here. Sampled by DJ Shadow on his seminal album Endtroducing….., the track brings Al Casey’s crunchy electric guitar back for a crucial solo that serves as the joyous high point of the album.
