David Oliver – Hope For La Roo
Part of a trio of privately released albums on David Oliver’s own Damiana Records, Hope For La Roo is a gorgeous collection of minimal jazz compositions centered around piano and various percussion instruments including talking drum, kalimba, lizard drum, finger cymbals, gong, and Chinese bell tree. The “world music” influence doesn’t ever feel forced in any way here though as Oliver utilizes each sound to patiently paint and expand on his minimal repeating piano motifs. Be sure to also check out Lizard Grows On You and Marishka, if not for the music, but the album covers alone.
