Durutti Column – The Return Of The Durutti Column

The second and most commercially successful album by Detroit session guitarist Dennis Coffey, Evolution is a psychedelic funk classic centering around an array of guitars (alto, baritone, tenor) played through various fuzz, wah-wah, and sustain pedals supported by masterclass performances from musicians in the Motown session orbit including bassist Bob Babbitt and percussionist Jack Ashford. Connected to Motown’s backing group the Funk Brothers, Coffey’s “Detroit Guitar Band” reaches a perfect fusion of funk groove, psychedelia, r&b swagger, and rock energy here that encapsulates the various musical movements around Detroit in the early ’70s. The album famously contains the track “Scorpio,” which has one of the most sampled drum breaks of all time used on Young MC’s “Bust a Move,” Fugees’ “The Score,” Public Enemy’s “Night of the Living Baseheads,” and countless other hits.
