Donald Byrd – Electric Byrd
Played by our good friend Victor Rodriguez at last summer’s listening sessions… Electric Byrd is the great Howard University educator/trumpeter’s most psychedelic outing obviously influenced by Miles Davis’ seminal electric Bitches Brew period. Of course, Byrd does his own thing thing here with backing from Ron Carter and an infusion of latin jazz from legends Airto Moreira and Hermeto Pascoal. Atmospheric, textural, and filled with tape echo’d solos, the tracks fuse together elements of funk, Brazilian music, and hard-bop to form immensely deep grooves that get better with each listen.
