Doug Lucas moved from Arkansas to Europe in 1968 and would go on to release his first solo record in 1976. He played in the ethnic Africa-orientated jazz band Mombasa and in Belgian jazz-rock outfit The J.J. Band, which was also known as Plus. Lucas’s music is characterized by its intricate compositions blending diverse musical influences while also incorporating elements of improvisation. Niara was produced by legendary drummer Bruno Castellucci, who was a very in-demand session player and a member of the jazz-funk group Placebo. B1 “One For You” hits the spot with its deep, slow groove that stays captivating with Doug’s luminous trumpet playing working in perfect harmony with Franck Wuyts’ sensitive yet dynamic keys. While Niara brought Lucas some recognition (including a writeup in Jazz Forum Magazine), he remained relatively under the radar throughout his career. – Ally
