One of Ghana’s greatest producers and arrangers, Ebo Taylor delivers a perfect fusion of African highlife and afrobeat with American soul, jazz and funk on his 1980 classic Conflict Nkru! While most of Taylor’s previous releases were sung in Ghanian, Conflict Nkru! is sung in English, likely in order to reach a wider audience. The tracks on Conflict are immediately warm and infectious with Taylor’s syncopated grooves, jazz sensibilities, honest lyrics, and voice piercing through even when mixed in with a chorus. While Fela Kuti reigns as the king of afrobeat, Taylor’s unique take on Ghanian afro-funk/jazz is truly not to be missed and has in recent years built up a sizable cult following. Don’t miss Taylor at the Lodge Room later in August.
