Less than a year after her passing, a new archival recording has emerged from the beloved Ethiopian nun, composer, and pianist Emahoy Tsegué-Maryam Guèbrou. Released by Mississippi Records in collaboration with Emahoy’s family, Souvenirs is the first album to feature vocals from the “Honky Tonk Nun.” Songs of “wisdom, loss, mourning, and exile,” these recordings were made at Emahoy’s home in Addis Abba amidst political upheaval shortly before the Red Terror and 1974 Revolution would force her family into exile. These deeply personal recordings, sung directly into a boombox and originally intended to only be heard by family members, feel like the closest we can get to “the unknowable music” of one of the greatest pianists of the past century. “Don’t cry / Childhood won’t come back / Let it go with love.”
