Ataraxia – The Unexplained

Self-described by its members as “Cool, no sweat funk,” EP-4 was a groundbreaking no-wave / post-punk band from Kyoto led by sonic experimentalist Kaoru Sato, who had previously produced the cult classic 1980 album R.N.A.O Meets P.O.P.O. EP-4 can be considered a direct successor to R.N.A. Organism’s dubby industrial noise and their 1983 debut album Lingua Franca-1 is a masterclass in mutant funk featuring tape loops, freak-a-zoid vocals, heavily distorted guitars, percussion, and punk-funk basslines. Highly recommended for fans of Liquid Liquid, Public Image Ltd, The Pop Group, ESG, etc.
