Fazer – Mara

The record that started it all for Squama Recordings, Mara is the debut from Munich-based jazz musicians Matthias Lindermayr (trumpet), Paul Brändle (guitar), Martin Brugger (bass), Simon Popp (drums), and
Sebastian Wolfgruber (drums). Fazer establishes the nascent label’s modern jazz sound with this fantastic release combining African and Latin rhythms with dubby basslines and melancholic melodies. The unusual lineup with two drummers, bass , guitar and trumpet leaves an open space for unfettered improvisation. Through the concept of repetition and finely measured dynamics, Fazer create a drawing energy that can be felt directly at their live shows and has been captured perfectly on this record.
