One of our favorite releases of 2023, Lashes is the debut album from New Zealand-based duo Hysterical Love Project aka Kiwi producer Ike Zwanikken and vocalist Brooklyn Mellar. Tracing lines through ambient trip-hop, downtempo shoegaze, outsider dream pop, etc., these songs draw from the best of the late ‘80s/early ‘90s rock/electronic scenes, suspending time with a tranquil stillness that’s equally somber and blissed-out. While downtempo breaks are still a crucial part of this contemporary trip-hop sound, Ike’s modern, subtly dubwise-infused hazy production adds a freshness to the music that lifts these tracks far beyond and shimmering above all the tired tropes of the genre. Lashes was originally released on CD-only in 2023, but now is (finally) getting the proper vinyl pressing it deserves. Not to be missed!
