Jun Togawa Unit – 極東慰安唱歌

A remarkable overview of a Spanish experimental iconoclast, Javier Segura’s El Sol Desde Oriente: Selected & Unreleased Recordings 1980-1990 gathers nine instrumental pieces that reveal the breadth of the artist’s muse. Segura got his start in the early 1980s as part of the Spanish duo Arte Moderno — their astounding track “Jardin Marroqui” is included here — before setting out on his own. A producer/engineer who came up in the Canary Islands, Segura on El Sol Desde Oriente moves from frantic acoustic guitar excursions on “Pasaje Hindu,” explores beatless ambient a track later on “El Silencio,” and outre rhythm freak-outs on “Extraños en la Sabana.” A singular collection, El Sol Desde Oriente will open a portal to Segura’s consistently surprising work. – Randall
