Moufang, Czamanski – Recreational Kraut

Another favorite from 2023, Recreational Kraut is a collection of ECM-adjacent ambient and jazz-infused electronic compositions performed by Jordan Czamanski (Jordan GCZ) & David Moufang (Move D). While more known for their electronic/dance releases, Czamanski and Moufang both have deep backgrounds in jazz and showcase that side of their craft alongside their mastery of electronic textures and machine grooves. “Recreation Parts 1-3” is a 21-minute-long piece that centers around Fender Rhodes and the amazing Soma Lab Lyra-8 synthesizer which produces gorgeous organic, droning tones that can be manipulated to sound like anything from a wind instrument to an analog synthesizer. Elsewhere on the album, Roland 808 drum beats meet space-echo’d jazz chords and vintage synth flourishes for a sound that seems equally indebted to the sonic worlds developed by Manfred Eicher’s iconic label as the futuristic transmissions beaming out of Detroit.
