Robert Aiki Aubrey Lowe – Thought Withdrawal

The debut album from the prolific Heidelberg-based producer David Moufang aka Move D, Kunststoff is a classic home-listening electronic music LP from the ’90s electronic chill-out era. While Warp Records’ 1992 Artificial Intelligence explored IDM, downtempo, and ambient techno that reached beyond the demands of the dance floor, Move D’s take on chill-out electronic music is groovier, and perhaps more soulful, with deep chords, melodic lines, and swung 808 drum machine beats leading the way. Moufang’s background as a jazz guitarist and drummer comes through in his electronic productions, and that mastery of rhythm, harmony, and melody is quite reminiscent of Detroit producers like Carl Craig and Mad Mike Banks, or deep house legend Larry Heard. Released in 1995, Kunststoff holds up amazingly well, and sounds like it could have been produced today.
