Featured on Osaka-based DJ Mori-Ra’s popular Japanese Breeze mix series, Ultra Hyper Cosmic Voice by Nami Hotatsu is a hidden gem of Japanese ambient house that was once hailed as a “shamanistic vision” by Haruomi Hosono. The album was originally released CD-only in 1994 on Japanese “cyber occult” and “healing music” pioneer Henry Kawahara’s cult favorite Green Energy label, which championed a sort of futuristic blend of experimental electronic, exotica and new age music. Hotatsu’s ethereal vocals draw from a rich tradition of Japanese folk here while producer Hiroyuki Sanada supports with unusual beats that are infused with ’80s digital new age instrumentation and the ecstasy-filled melodies of New York and Chicago deep house. Highly recommended for fans of Dream Dolphin and Haruomi Hosono’s ’90s downtempo releases.
