A truly unhinged private press oddity from San Francisco-based band President’s Breakfast, Industrial Strength Funk In A Dub Stylee is exactly what it’s name entails. If you’re thinking Adrian Sherwood, On-U Sound, Mark Stewart + Maffia, Bill Laswell, Material new wave / post-punk / dub, you’d be close, but the sound here is somehow even more diabolical than all those groups with a bit of political edge infused with James Brown’s funk and jazz fusion level instrumental chops. From the group’s website: “The collective spirit of the improvising is akin to New Orleans hot jazz- or is it that the big sound whose timbre changes slowly, is drawn from the orchestral leanings of Ligeti, Berio, Lutoslowski, Kagel and Nono? For that matter take a bite out of Miles Davis’ Big Fun then let’s talk timbre!” Be sure to listen to A4 “President’s Breakfast,” which features some chaotic, but well placed, cutting and chopping between industrial samples, hip-hop drum break-esque grooves, and cheeky political banter. “Now swallow this… you ding dong motherfuckers… do you ever get the feeling that the people that run this country have too much steroids for breakfast?”
