Part of the ’80s New York avant-garde scene, multi-instrumentalist Rhys Chatham studied under electronic music pioneer Morton Subotnick and minimalist composer La Monte Young. Chatham’s second album Die Donnergötter “The Thundergods” features his signature “guitar orchestra” composition for 6 electric guitars, electric bass, and drums. Produced and mixed by Peter Gordon, the track uses “the instrumentation and sounds of serious hard rock as raw material” fusing academic minimalism with the punk rock of the Ramones.
