Ryo Fukui – Mellow Dream

The followup to Ryo Fukui’s widely popular and now thoroughly revived classic Scenery, Mellow Dream pushes forward with even more of that rich modal, bop, and cool jazz presented in the first album, but this time with three original compositions versus just one. Self-taught and undeniably Japanese, Fukui was a “rare combination of pure talent, unique personal approach and focused discipline.” The sounds on his sophomore release are, for lack of a better word, mellower and more delicate than the first album with a unique maturity coming from a pianist who truly did it his own way.
