One of the finest Brazilian jazz funk fusion albums ever recorded, the exquisite music found on São Paulo • Brasil is well deserving of its cult status. Cesar Camargo Mariano, the celebrated Brazilian jazz pianist/composer, was born in Sao Paulo Brasil and this record serves as his homage. From the heavily saturated guitar licks to the rhodes keyboard throughout, São Paulo • Brasil saw Mariano and co. step deep into jazz funk/fusion territory. Tight, tough drum grooves, intricate arrangements, layers of synthesizers, percussion and effects, transport and tell a story from the first beat. It is it rumored that there were plenty of “illicit substances” in and around these recording sessions, so perhaps that’s why the record has been known to ‘get the party started’ in many a setting. Playful, yet spiritually cosmic and aware, one cannot help but be swept up by the mood and transcended by the vibe conveyed in these grooves. The original is almost impossible to find these days, but luckily the team behind Mr. Bongo reissued the album in 2018!
