By the year 2000, the influential British electronic dance trio Saint Etienne had released a half-dozen records, each of which used as a starting point the revolution born when synthesizers teamed with rave-driven electronic dance music to create sounds both exuberant and melancholy. Albums like the house-driven Foxbase Alpha, the more nuanced Tiger Bay, and Good Humor (their first release for Creation Records) put them on the map, but new sounds were eclipsing theirs. For Sound of Water, singer Sarah Cracknell and producer-synth-programmers Pete Wiggs and Bob Stanley expanded their approach, as heard on killer songs “Heart Failed (In the Back of a Taxi),” “Boy is Crying,” and “Downey, California.” Bigger sound. Deeper, more inventive textures. Precisely measured accents. Buoyed by arrangements from Sean O’Hagan (High Llamas) and Berlin producer To Rococo Rot, Sound of Water blossoms more with each nudge of the volume knob; heard at full volume, the nooks and passageways otherwise eclipsed create whole new environments.
