Ornette Coleman – Science Fiction
Free jazz pioneer Ornette Coleman returns to his original (and arguably best) lineup with Don Cherry, Charlie Haden, and Billy Higgins on 1972’s Science Fiction. The music is deep and cosmic… “The only credentials you need are human form and planetary citizenship. And that’s all you need to get into this music. It emphasizes the feelings we all share as human beings; each musician plays his own biological rhythms, the dimly-remembered experiences of his past lives, and what he had for breakfast.” The title track is the clear standout here and sounds a bit like floating through space and time with a wall of brass sounds, baby noises, and space echo’d spoken word vocals poet David Henderson.
