Tim Berne, Bill Frisell – …Theoretically
…Theoretically is a masterpiece duo album from two NYC avant-garde jazz musicians at the top of their game. Bill Frisell lays down layers of gorgeous and intricate ambient guitar while Tim Berne’s saxophone shrieks and soars. An unconventional but perfect pairing, the duo blend their sounds “into a single fabric of weighty yet spacious sound.” The guitar work on opener “M.” at times reminds us of cult classics from Michael Bierylo, Kevin McCormick, Windham Hill, and ECM, but Tim Berne pushes the music into more unsettling free jazz territory, while also providing moments of lush melody and harmony.
