Shackleton – The Scandal Of Time

Urban Tribe, the experimental techno project founded by Sherard Ingram aka DJ Stingray, brings back the supergroup lineup of Anthony “Shake” Shakir, Kenny Dixon Jr, and Carl Craig on 2010’s self-titled full-length for Moodymann’s Mahogani Music. Much like 1998’s masterpiece The Collapse Of Modern Culture, Urban Tribe (Program 01-17) shifts through a wide range of moods ranging from electro beatdown to deep house to short, experimental sonic sketches featuring spoken word and unconventional samples. Like previous Urban Tribe releases, you might be able to point out certain production intricacies from each of the Detroit legends featured here like Craig’s melodic sensibilities, Ingram’s drum programming, Shake’s live keyboards, and Moodymann’s sample stylings, but the resulting full-listen comes together as something of its own – a powerful showcase of forward-thinking Afrofuturist neo-techno-soul from the Motor City.
