Wildflower – S.T.
Inspired by spiritual jazz pioneers John and Alice Coltrane, Pharoah Sanders, Yusef Lateef and Sun Ra along with Gnawa music, modal jazz, and Bengali folk, London-based jazz trio Wildflower deliver a stunning set of contemporary tribe jazz filled with deeply infectious basslines, percussion grooves, and free-flowing woodwinds. The jazz trio format featuring Idris Rahman (flute, sax), Leon Brichard (bass) and Tom Skinner (drums) works amazingly here with the three musicians communicating and improvising freely over simple themes often centered around bass. “Where the earth meets the sky,” in particular, hits that perfect organic, delicate, meditative vibe… Highly recommended for fans of Matthew Halsall, Nubya Garcia, Yussef Dayes, etc.
