Bebop to HipHop: The Musical Influences of Jean-Michel Basquiat
The final segment of The Broad’s three-part video series dedicated to the famed New York City artist is available now.
Time Decorated: The Musical Influences of Jean-Michel Basquiat is a new video series from the Broad exploring the impact of music on NYC artist Basquiat’s now iconic style. The series includes three segments, Jazz and Bebop, Punk and No Wave, and Bebop 2 Hip Hop via Basquiat, all filmed at the Broad, in newly installed Basquiat galleries displaying the museum’s uniquely deep representation of the artist’s work.
Part 3 of the series features Professor Todd Boyd of USC speaking about the through lines from bebop to early hip-hop via use of particular iconography in Basquiat’s paintings and musical pillars such as Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, Public Enemy, and Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five.
