Dublab: From the Archives of Future Roots Radio
Dublab has released a new book chronicling the non-profit online radio station’s storied 20+ year history.
It’s difficult to imagine what Los Angeles’ music scene would be like without “Future Roots Radio” station dublab. One of the pioneers of online radio, the non-profit station has been operating since 1999 (wow!) and continues to be a beacon of light in the scene supporting the local and global music community through daily programming, podcasts, live events, concerts, and special projects. Their entire ethos and approach to sharing music and building community is something we have always looked up to…
- Stay eclectic and adventurous.
- Allow DJs total freedom of music selection.
- Share sounds made by passionate creators.
- Support musicians who push the envelope.
- Highlight the work of lesser known musicians, record labels and artist collectives.
- Focus on obscure genres and micro-genres.
- Provide a platform for elder artists alongside newly emerging music makers.
- Share openly and ego-free.
From the Archives of Future Roots Radio…
Yesterday, dublab released a new book detailing the station’s 20+ years of adventurous radio experiments. Filled with archival interviews, photos, flyers, show retrospectives, records, designs, and artwork, the 260-page book examines dublab’s grassroots and algorithm-free approach to building an international arts radio network. Edited by Alejandro Cohen, J.C. Gabel and Mark “Frosty” McNeill, the book “bends time and space through sound… traveling back to the dawn of Internet radio—a pre podcast/smartphone/social-media era with infinite potential and flash forward for premonitions of other worlds, other sounds.”
Book Synopsis: “dublab: Future Roots Radio springs to life with scenes from sad music parties, all-night ambient happenings, and multi-sensory underground events. Stories of sleepwalking DJs, thrift store album alchemy, and sizzling circuit boards fill these pages. Wise elders, optimistic youth, and receptive listeners share their sonic worldviews. By offering an alternative to mainstream music, Dublab aims to encourage rich life experiences through deeper listening. This book is a door to your destiny. Crack it open and ride these waves.”
From book designer / longtime dublab resident Jeremiah Chiu:
“This project was a true labor of love. To try to capture 20+ years of dublab in a single volume took an enormous effort, scrubbing through thousands of images, ephemera, interviews, events, moments, etc… what is here is a snapshot, a celebration, a portrait of an ever-growing, ever-present community of light, love, and sound in Los Angeles.”
