Meredith Monk premieres Indra’s Net next Friday at Mills College

The innovative vocalist and composer will premiere a new piece at Mills College in Oakland.
Vocalist, composer, choreographer, artist, and ECM favorite Meredith Monk has a new piece premiering next week. For those unfamiliar with Monk’s work, the innovative singer transformed Western vocal music and also reimagined artistic disciplines — blending and blurring forms in exciting and experimental ways. During her five-plus decades as a composer and choreographer, she has staged dances that were operas, operas that were dances, and music theatre pieces that were somehow both.
Monk’s newest interdisciplinary, evening-length music theater piece is an experiential performance work affirming the interconnectedness of life. Following On Behalf of Nature (2013), a plea for ecological awareness, and Cellular Songs (2018), which turned attention to the fabric of life itself, Indra’s Net is Monk’s third work in a trilogy dedicated to our relationship with the natural world.
Indra’s Net will premiere Friday, November 12th at 7pm PST in a concert-version to a limited capacity audience in the Jeannik Méquet Littlefield Concert Hall on the Mills College campus in Oakland, California. The performance will also be made available via live-stream on the Mills Performing Arts website.
