My Record Dealer interviews Chee Shimizu (Organic Music)
Here’s a bit of light during these dark times… My Record Dealer is a new web platform and interview series launched a few months ago to support record shops/dealers and help them get better visibility during the pandemic. From their website: “My Record Dealer was built to share the love of music through the voice of the people who go out there and dig treasures for us to enjoy: Our favorite record dealers! Our mission is to give them a voice here so they can share those stories with us, and introduce their latest musical gems!”
The episodes follow a simple format: the host spends the first section diving into the stories and backgrounds of the esteemed record store owners and then asks them to select five records from the shop to share. The most recent episode features renowned Japanese record collector and DJ Chee Shimizu, who operates the Organic Music store and wrote one of our favorite Japanese music disc guides Obscure Sound. The interview includes some sage advice from the host and Shimizu on the topic of learning to listen to new genres, “I think the journey itself is necessary. If you try to get into it immediately, you might not like it… When you’re not tied by genres, the range of music you can enjoy really becomes broader.”
