Nyabinghi roots reggae meets fuzzy blues guitars on Freedom Sounds, the debut album from The Sons of Negus. Led by Ras Michael aka Dadawah, a singer and Nyabinghi drumming specialist who contributed on recording sessions at Lee “Scratch” Perry’s Black Ark studio including his work with Bob Marley, the group was a pioneering force in ’70s roots reggae blending Rastafari spirituality, chanting, and message with soul and psychedelic sounds. The interplay between the deep, meditative Nyabinghi drumming and the more individualistic blues guitar soloing makes for quite a unique contrast, while the loose, spiritual group chanting between Michael and the other members of the groups acts almost more as atmosphere than a traditional vocal lead. Highly recommended for fans of both ’60s / ’70s rhythm & blues and reggae!
