Wackies Rhythm Force – The Dub Generals
Recorded sometime in the early ’80s, The Dub Generals is a heavy set of dubs credited to Wackies Rhythm Force aka Bullwackies All Stars. The album is essentially a showcase record featuring the Jamaica-born multi-instrumentalist Clive “Azul” Hunt, who released that deadly Orthodox Dub record in 1978. All riddims feature “Azul” on flute which gives the tracks a uniquely floaty feeling that lifts the sub-heavy grooves into a sort of ethereal realm. Lloyd “Bullwackie” Barnes’ production is sparse here and less spaced out than usual choosing to rely on the strength of the performances instead with a bit of equalization and subtle spring reverb. Three tracks include vocals by Wayne Jarrett, likely pulled from sessions for his now cult classic Showcase Vol. 1 album.
