Patrick Houchen aka Shaka Man is a Jamaican musician from Cambridge who was taught by Rita Marley’s father Papa Roy. He began his musical career at a very young age playing a rattler and bass drum for the Pocomania church, and would later form the roots reggae group The Rastafarians. Sometime in the ’80s, Shaka Man would migrate to Los Angeles and launch his own Majicaa Records imprint to release his solo work along with the music of his wife Tracey aka Shakeena. I Bet You is a Los Angeles lovers rock gem featuring a raw drum machine groove, cruising guitar licks, and a deep bassline alongside Shakeena’s addictive and heartfelt vocals. If you like this record, we also highly recommend checking out Shakeena’s 1987 full-length Dance Music which hits on a sort of digi-lovers with roots flavors.
