Robert Aiki Aubrey Lowe – Thought Withdrawal

In the early ’90s Sonido Dueñez, a DJ from Monterrey, inadvertently invented a new genre of music when his turntable overheated and started playing at half speed. Cumbia Rebajada, or slowed down cumbia, delivered a wobbly psychedelic experience that listeners just couldn’t get enough of, and his tapes would spread across Mexico, South America, and the rest of the world. Last year, alongside a reissue of Sonido Dueñez’s first two tapes, avant-garde sound artist Delia Beatriz aka Debit brought Sonido Dueñez’s innovations to another dimension of sound, further warping and slowing down Cumbia Rebajada into her own droning Desaceleradas. “The goal was not to sample,” she explains, “but to engage in conversation.” Highly recommended for fans of Tim Hecker, William Basinski, Kelman Duran.
