Laurie Spiegel – The Expanding Universe

Ночной Проспект (Night Avenue) is an influential Russian synth-pop band formed by Alexei Borisov, a guitar player / history student at the Moscow State University, and Ivan Sokolovsky, an electronic music enthusiast and a connoisseur of rare synthesizers. Mostly known for their industrial electro-pop and absurdist electronics, the duo released one instrumental album in 1986 titled Курорты Кавказа (Resorts of the Caucasus). Featuring Sokolovsky’s vintage Italian synthesizers alongside dubbed-out afro-caribbean drum machine percussion and, the album comes across something like mutant industrial post-punk dub, at times not too distant from Adrian Sherwood’s African Head Charge project, but much colder, machine-based, and certainly firmly rooted in the sound of the European continent.
