One of our favorite underrated ECM cuts… And She Answered by one time project AM 4 aka saxophonist and flutist Wolfgang Puschnig, pianist Uli Scherer, and vocalist Linda Sharrock is an otherworldly blend of spoken word poetry, minimal jazz instrumentation, and Nordic folk that perfectly captures the magic of Manfred Eicher’s influential world jazz label. The trio of Sharrock, Scherer, and Puschnig dazzle in their own individual ways while playing off each others’ ideas in a pure, improvisational setting that leads to moments that any jazz fan can appreciate. Opener “Streets and Rivers” is the clear winner here; a meditative, synthesizer-driven exploration that features Sharrock and Puschnig matching each other in one of the best saxophone vocal pairings we’ve ever heard.
