Art Blakey!!!!! Jazz Messengers!!!!!
Drummer Art Blakey expands his legendary Jazz Messengers group to a sextet for the first time on this 1961 classic album on Impulse! The album features a young Wayne Shorter on saxophone along with the incredible bass work of Jaymie Merritt who has been described as the “quintessential hard bop bassist.” While the album lacks a “hit” standard like previous releases featuring versions of Charles Mingus’ “Moanin'” or Dizzy Gillespie’s “A Night in Tunisia,” the playing here is exceptional and showcases Blakey and crew at the top of their game delivering both intense driving hard-bop, along with gorgeous, shimmering moments filled with melodic and harmonic density.
