“Not your typical Brazilian compilation,” Aquarium Drunkard’s latest Atenção!: Novos Sons do Brasil presents 10 tracks from a new wave of Brazilian artists influenced as much by American, UK, and international music as they are the musical traditions of their homeland. Psychedelic tropicalia, grunge, bossa nova, indie rock, afro-brazilian rhythms, punk energy, and much more are creatively mixed together in a wonderful musical anthropofagia (cultural cannibalism). Crucial to note, the liner notes mention that Aquarium Drunkard’s “Justin Gage is admittedly no Brazilian music expert,” but that’s exactly why we love this compilation so much. It’s not compiled from a showy “holy grail record collector” type of perspective, but from someone who truly revels in the joy of sharing music.
