Niagara was a supergroup project envisioned by legendary German jazz drummer Klauss Weiss to create an orchestra made entirely of drummers and percussionists. Their 1970 self-titled debut is a crate digger / rare groove classic featuring an all-star ensemble of rock and jazz drummers from Munich including pop icon Udo Lindenberg and session musician Keith Forsey, who played with Giorgio Moroder and Donna Summer. The album is comprised of two extended tribal, psychedelic drum workouts fusing rhythms from around the world including Afrobeat, Afro-cuban, jazz, krautrock, disco, funk, and more. The A side “Sangandongo” contains a classic b-boy open drum groove at about the 8-minute mark that’s been sampled by hip-producers including DJ Shadow. The album cover is iconic for obvious reasons…
