Bebo Baldan – Vapor Frames 86/91
Taking cues from Harold Budd and Brian Eno, Venice-born sonic alchemic Bebo Baldan (who has appeared on albums from many legends including Frank Zappa, Jon Hassell, Ryuichi Sakamoto, Sinead O’Connor, and others) crafts a spiritual mixture of ambient electronics and traditional Indian and South American instrumentation on his sophomore album Vapor Frames 86/91. The album was featured in the “Organic” section of Chee Shimizu’s Obscure Sound disc guide and very much fits in with that ’80s world-infused ambient electronic sound made by like-minded experimental artists like Vito Ricci, Roberto Musci, Eblen Macari, Finis Africae, Thomas Almqvist, etc. Baldan’s electronic drum programming here is quite masterful and blends naturally with the organic instrumentation (djembe, sarod, guitar, saxophone, fretless bass) while layers of Frippertronics-style tape looping is applied to create that dreamy, ethereal sound that we all know and love.
