Bill Nelson – The Love That Whirls (Diary Of A Thinking Heart)
On The Love That Whirls (Diary Of A Thinking Heart), the wildly creative force of Be Bop Deluxe founder Bill Nelson is on full display with the artist playing virtually all instruments on the album’s near 40 tracks. Very likely inspired by Japan and Yellow Magic Orchestra, the album features highly polished production and a bright, modern synthetic sound crafted with state of the art technology including drum machines, synthesizers, and sequencers. Nelson’s signature e-bow guitar is, of course, also very present here and sits perfectly inside the synth textures playing off the electronic percussion, white noise, and vibra-slap. On the classic title, Nelson explains, “It’s actually based on a fact, rather than a poetic fantasy. It has two direct connections…the first is to the ‘whirling dervishes.’ These are Sufi dancers who use the whirling dance as a form of prayer and worship. They are taught to love everything and their whirling dance is an expression of that love and a means of attaining divine ecstasy. Hence ‘The Love That Whirls.’
