Brazilian guitarist Bola Sete presents a beautiful collection of solo guitar music for Fantasy Records. The album includes compositions by the great Heitor Villa-Lobos, who has been described as “the single most significant creative figure in 20th-century Brazilian art music” for his unique compositional style combining contemporary European music with indigenous melodic and rhythmic techniques. Bola’s piano-like fingerstyle playing here is incredibly emotive with the sparse solo setting fully showcasing the Rio de Janeiro born artists’ dazzling bossa-informed sound. The late John Fahey, visionary American folk and blues guitarist, once said listening to Sete for the first time was “a turning point … I couldn’t sit still. I’d never heard anything like it since Charley Patton, and this was better. I was transformed, purged – I was not the same.”
