A collection of impossible to find self-released 12-inches along with unreleased archival material, Changes presents the soulful, dubby street soul sound of underground Manchester artist Bernadette Mosoph aka Bô’vel. “Check 4 U” is one of the great anthems of the pirate radio era. Featuring slick production, a dubwise hip-hop beat, and sweet street soul vocals, the track was an immediate hit in the Manchester underground with pirate radio stations like Buzz FM and Soul Nation playing it and local record stores quickly selling out. Elsewhere on the compilation, the influence of ’90s rave sounds (jungle, garage, breakbeat) starts to filter into Bô’vel’s sub-heavy sound. “Best Thing” combines a jungle breakbeat and a mellow dub groove with smooth vocal harmonies for a uniquely frenetic and deep love song. Similarly, “Do It Your Way” is a slowed-down breakbeat tune with a classic echo’d out Fender Rhodes chord along with an MC on the breakdown section. Highly recommended for fans of Erika de Casier, Sade, Loose Ends!
