CS + Kreme – EP #2

A supergroup or rather superduo of sorts, German electronic composer Burnt Friedman meets the great Can drummer Jaki Liebezeit for the first edition of their cult favorite Secret Rhythms series. Released in 2002, the album is a masterclass of futuristic, hard-to-classify improvisational electronic music that traces lines through dub, jazz, and outernational rhythms along with the glitch, IDM, and leftfield techno that Friedman has been known for. The duo are joined by Josef Suchy of Mouse on Mars on guitar and vibraphonist Morten Grønvad who lended his talents to Señor Coconut. While the dubwise influence is certainly here within the tempos and beats, it’s interesting to note that the sound here is actually quite crystalline compared to the cavernous, echo and raw spring reverb sound of traditional dub music. Instead, Friedman delivers an almost minimal electronic presentation of the sounds.
