Cocteau Twins – Treasure
A textural masterpiece, Cocteau Twins third album Treasure is possibly the group’s finest work and a definite 4AD record during the label’s creative peak. Robin Guthrie, Simon Raymonde, and Elizabeth Fraser are in top form here and push their ethereal sound to new heights (or depths). Delayed and heavily reverb-ed guitar, loud drum machines, angelic vocals, imaginary language – it’s all executed here perfectly. Brian Eno was originally asked to produce the album, but after hearing the band, responded: “I am really flattered that you asked, but I’d never had have the courage to use the size of reverb that you used on Head Over Heels! You don’t need a producer, you know exactly what your music is meant to sound like. You should do it yourself.”
