Featured on Test Pressing’s excellent Dubwise Vinyl column, Colourbox’s “Baby I Love You So” is a mesmerizingly original take on an Augustus Pablo production first sung by Jacob Miller. Released on UK indie label 4AD, the track fuses together elements of post-punk, blues, and dub with a “sampladelic” production approach that adds a cinematic layer to the reggae classic with gunshot sounds, effects, and movie dialogue woven into the groove. Colourbox would later go on to collaborate with cult electronic dream pop group A.R. Kane, CJ Mackintosh, and Dave Dorrell to produce the iconic underground club anthem turned UK National No.1 “Pump Up the Volume.” The track marked the beginning of the sampling era.
