Emerging from the New Romantic scene, an underground subculture in the United Kingdom characterized by flamboyant fashion inspired by glam rock and the Romantic period, Culture Club and their eccentric frontman Boy George became a worldwide sensation with their debut album Kissing To Be Clever. After two unsuccessful singles, the group’s breakthrough came with “Do You Really Want To Hurt Me,” a true amalgamation of cultures combining rock ballad, new wave, and synth pop styling with a mellow reggae groove. This clever mixing of sounds gave the band a wide appeal and they were “embraced by not only post-disco dance music enthusiasts, but also new wave listeners and pop fans as well.” B1 “Time (Clock Of The Heart),” arguably the best Culture Club song, is an ’80s club classic that still holds up today.
