Compiled by Stroom Records’ Ziggy Devriendt, Tropisch Verlangen, which translates to “Tropical Desire,” is a collection of handcrafted analogue electronic compositions by Belgian musician Cybe aka Siebe Baarda. Split into two halves (Yin and Yang), the music takes clear inspiration from the East and merges ’80s synthesizers, drum machines, samples, vocoders, and DIY production techniques with organic instruments from Bali, Java, and Thailand. The result is a truly beautiful and unique work that can easily be labeled as New Age, but somehow avoids many of the genre’s usual shortcomings.
